Colouring In for Adults

Yes it’s a thing!
If you are anything like me you will sit down with your kids to do some colouring in from time to time, but did you know it is said to help de-stress and unwind.

So popular is colouring in right now that one of the top best selling books on Amazon (US) is a colouring book for adults! The book Secret Garden by Scottish illustrator Johanna Basford contains intricately drawn pictures of flora and fauna.

According to The Guardian the surge in popularity is attributed to the ‘anti-stress’ benefits and nostalgia:

In the UK, Richard Merritt’s Art Therapy Colouring Book sits in fourth spot on Amazon’s bestseller lists, Millie Marotta’s Animal Kingdom – detailed pictures of animals to colour – sits in seventh, and a mindfulness colouring book sits in ninth. Basford’s titles are in second and eighth place – that’s half of’s top 10 taken up by colouring books for adults.

At independent UK publisher Michael O’Mara, which has sold almost 340,000 adult colouring books to date, head of publicity, marketing and online, Ana McLaughlin, attributes the craze to the way the category has been reimagined as a means of relaxation.  “The first one we did was in 2012, Creative Colouring for Grown-Ups. It sold strongly and reprinted, but it was last year that it all really mushroomed with Art Therapy, in June. It really took off for us – selling the anti-stress angle gave people permission to enjoy something they might have felt was quite childish,” she said.

I keep seeing The Mindfulness Colouring Book by Emma Farrarons popping up in my news feed also and on further delving there are a raft of beautifully illustrated colouring books out there, check out this one – The Animal Kingdom by Millie Marotta – how amazing is it!

Australian blogger Chantelle from Fat Mum Slim recently jumped on the band wagon and posted her top five adult colouring-in printables as well, check them out here. I printed out the “Today is Going to be Awesome” one and sat down last night to start colouring with my youngest. He loved it, I loved it. I might make it a regular thing. It is certainly a rare occasion when he’ll just sit quietly for an extended period.

Considering the nasty bout of weather we are in for over the next couple of days, don’t despair about the kids being house bound, why not wind down with some colouring in with them. While not as intricate as the examples above I have just made all my themed party printable colouring in pages FREE on my new website – The Lost Prints – so go check them out along with my other free printables.
