Lake Taupo – More than just a Lake

My family and I headed out of Auckland this past weekend, on a trip to Lake Taupo.  I spent quite a bit of time there as a child, but my husband had never been.  He was quite surprised to find out just how many other things are at Lake Taupo.  So, I thought I would share some of the attractions, just in case others were missing out on a great family place to visit.

There is the thermal wonderland of Orakei Korako in the North, a hidden valley of hot springs, geysers and mud pools. Then the amazing Tongariro National Park in the South.  Obviously the ski fields aren’t too far away either.

We were lucky to have fabulous weather and stayed at De Bretts, which has thermal pools with waterslides and a kids play area … awesome! We really enjoyed our stay there and booked into a superior lodge which was almost as big as our house.

The trees in Taupo were breathtaking, it was Autumn, so I guess a great time to appreciate the trees with all the different shades.  Most places too, you can see the snow capped mountains which make the whole area like something from a postcard.

There are lots of adrenalin rush type things to do but as we had a load of kids, we stuck to the less adventurous and will wait until my boys are older for that sort of thing.  If you however, want to sample that sort of thing there are bungy jumps, cliffhanger swings, skydiving, flightseeing by float plane or helicopter and much more.

If you like bike riding then Taupo is for you as there are so many tracks for this or even go on a quad bike safari.

But as we had five boys from eight years to one, instead we visited Huka Falls.  Let me just say, it is so impressive I was almost a little scared.  ‘Get away from the edge’, I would yell, and my boys would look at me like I was weird because there was a fence keeping them in.

Then we headed to look at the Moon Craters, which the boys loved.  It was a super pleasant walk for the kids, not so much for me with the toddler who didn’t want to be carried or hold my hand!  Got to love two year olds!

In summary, we just loved our two nights in Taupo and will definitely be visiting there again soon.
